Bhutan Airlines launches direct Hong Kong flights

Bhutan Airlines direct Hong Kong flights

Paro is one of the world's most challenging airports

Bhutan has become a realistic travel option for Hong Kongers with the announcement of a direct flight route between Bhutan and Hong Kong in the new year.

Bhutan Airlines announced this week that it launches direct Hong Kong flights between Paro and Hong Kong International Airport from January 27, 2025. The new route will eliminate the need for layovers in Nepal, Thailand and India, saving travellers at least three to four hours in transit time. The journey from Hong Kong to Paro currently takes around nine hours.

The move comes as part of Bhutan Airline’s expansion of its Asian network. It has also introduced direct flights with Vietnam and Malaysia this winter. The new Hong Kong route will take around four hours and initially just 16 flights annually have been scheduled between the two places, taking place during peak travel times such as Lunar New year, summer holidays and Christmas.

“We’re thrilled to announce Hong Kong as our third destination for the 2025 fixed departure flights,” said Bhutan Airlines’ chief executive officer Pema Nadik. “We understand that the holiday season is a popular time for travellers, we have designed schedules with that in mind, offering Hongkongers an opportunity to explore Bhutan, one of Asia’s unique destinations.”

Gianna Hsu, chairperson of the Travel Industry Council of Hong Kong said she hoped year-round flights between Hong Kong and Bhutan would eventually be established.

Paro International Airport is considered to be one of the most challenging airports in the world due to its mountainous location. Just a handful or pilots are qualified to land and take off at the airport.
