Cathay Pacific will fly three times a week between Hong Kong and Cairns

Cathay Pacific has announced it will be bringing back its Cairns service.

The airline will resume flying to the Far North Queensland destination from December 17. There will be three flights a week during the peak holiday period until March 29 2025. Cathay noted that this period includes both Christmas and Chinese New Year holidays.

Cairns airport officials said they were pleased to welcome Cathay Pacific back.

“This is a significant and highly positive announcement for our region as we enter a new era in the relationship between Cairns Airport and Cathay Pacific,” said Cairns Airport boss Richard Barker.

Cathay ceased flights to Cairns almost five years ago. Tourism Tropical North Queensland said the return of Cathay Pacific would boost visitor numbers to the destination during the shoulder season.

“This 14-week season has the potential to bring a AU$20 million boost to the Tropical North Queensland economy, helping to support the one-in-five jobs in tourism year-round,” said Tourism Tropical North Queensland chief executive officer Mark Olsen.

More details will be released later this year.
