Hong Kong’s dining spots are serving up a tasty banquet of auspicious Chinese New Year dishes

Live 'longevity noodle' pulling at Hutong

Chinese New Year is a time for feasting and celebration. Traditionally, families gather for sumptuous meals with festive dishes such as poon choi, a traditional Cantonese casserole containing layers of auspicious ingredients such as braised meats and seafood.

Lou hei, a tossed raw fish salad traditionally eaten in Singapore and other parts of Southeast Asia, is gaining popularity in Hong Kong and can also be found on many menus. Diners dig their chopsticks into the salad and toss each ingredient high in the air while repeating an auspicious greeting.

If you’re heading out for a Chinese New Year meal, expect to see menus featuring lots of fish (prosperity), Chinese dumplings (wealth), braised or roasted whole chicken (luck), glutinous rice cake (improved career prospects), spring rolls (wealth), longevity noodles (longevity and happiness), prawns (happiness) and fruit and vegetables for energy and wellness, citrus fruit being particularly auspicious.

But above all, Chinese New Year is about gathering together with family and friends to look forward to a prosperous and healthy year to come.

Head to Hutong in Tsim Sha Tsui  for a full eight-course Chinese New Year Banquet. The meal is designed for four people and includes traditional items like ‘lo hei’ tossed salad plus noodle pulling displays on January 28. Highlights include crispy-skin chicken with rose tea and ginger, Hutong’s signature flaming Peking duck, crispy Mandarin fish in sweet and sour sauce and seared A5 wagyu beef tenderloin. The banquet runs from January 24 to February 12.
