Hong Kong’s in-town check-in facility is possibly one of the most useful travel hacks in Asia.
The service enables travellers to check-in their luggage 24 hours in advance and up to 90 minutes before their flight and without having to travel out to the airport. This means you can enjoy your departure day in Hong Kong luggage-free.
Passengers need an Octopus or Airport Express ticket to enter the in-town check in area. But don’t worry, you are only charged for your journey to the airport once, the money is deducted at the check-in entry gate but not when you enter the platform entry gate.
Two stations currently offer the facility, including Hong Kong Station on Hong Kong Island and Kowloon Station in Kowloon. Travellers need simply to head to the station nearest to them and check-in their baggage as they would normally do at the airport.
There are predominantly smart check-in kiosks available, but staff are on-hand to help you as you check-in your luggage. After you’ve checked everything in, you should head to the Self Bag Drop Counters and from there the bags are forwarded to the airport via the Airport Express. Make sure to have your passport, digital boarding pass and of course your bags.
Any airline is able to take part in the scheme and at present, there are four major airlines that offer the in-town check-in service.
Cathay Pacific passengers can use the service at Hong Kong Station from 6am to 11pm and at Kowloon Station from 6am to 3pm.
Hong Kong Airlines passengers can use the service at Hong Kong Station from 6am to 7pm and at Kowloon Station from 6am to 3pm.
Qantas Airways passengers can use the service at Hong Kong Station from 7am to 6pm and at Kowloon Station from 7am to 3pm.
Singapore Airlines passengers can use the service at Hong Kong Station from 9am to 5.20pm.
