The new hotel has retained its original golden spire
Dusit Thani Bangkok hotel is soon to open following a six year reconstruction project.
The original flagship hotel opened in 1970 and at the time was the tallest building in Bangkok. However, in 2018 the entire building was demolished to make way for a new-look property.
The hotel has been reconstructed as part of a mixed-use development known as Dusit Central Park. Along with the hotel, also included in the build are luxury apartments at Dusit Residences and Dusit Parkside, an office tower, a retail centre and a roof park, all of which are slated to open in 2025.
As for the new Dusit Thani Bangkok Hotel, there are 257 brand new guest rooms (reduced from more than 500 in the original property), an ‘urban wellness concept’, ten restaurants and bars, an outdoor pool and an eight-metre-high ball room with panoramic views over neighbouring Lumpini Park.
The design of the new hotel has been led by Hong Kong design firm Andre Fu Studio and melds the traditional Thai elements of the original hotel with contemporary aesthetics. Warm tones and subtle motifs create a modern interpretation of Thai artistry and a ‘Heritage Floor’, decorated with local artworks inspired by the hotel, captures the spirit of the original building.
Rooms have views over Lumpini Park
“For more than five decades, the original Dusit Thani Bangkok was a beloved landmark, a true ambassador of Thai hospitality,” said Dusit International chief executive officer Suphajee Suthumpun. “As we embarked on its reimagination, we were committed to honouring that legacy… This meant preserving elements of the original hotel and blending them with fresh, modern design. Throughout this process, we stayed true to the vision of Dusit’s founder, Thanpuying Chanut Piyaoui, and owner, Chanin Donavanik, to showcase Thai culture, art and gracious service.”
The original hotel’s famous golden spire, which was quite the landmark in Bangkok, has been incorporated into the new design but is now three times larger than the original. The pillars in Banjarong Thai Restaurant have been preserved and are now reinstalled in the hotel’s main lobby. The restaurant’s carved teak ceiling has also been conserved.
The new hotel incorporates feng shui principles, with every room having unobstructed views of Lumpini Park through large bay windows with a gold finish. They represent the ‘golden frames of memories’ and draw positive energy into the hotel.
Dusit Thani Bangkok reopens on September 27.
