HK Express takes off for Hiroshima, Penang, Phu Quoc, Hualien, Shizuoka and Sendai

HK Express is ramping up its regional flights this winter with a raft of new destinations. Here's everything you need to know

HK Express takes off for destiantions including Hiroshima, Penang, Phu Quoc, Hualien, Shizuoka and Sendai this winter


From November 1, the airline will be flying three times a week to Hiroshima in Japan. This is HK Express’ second destination in Japan following the launch of services to Takamatsu. Flights to Hiroshima will run on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Flight UO822 will leave Hong Kong at 9.15am, arriving in Hiroshima at 1.30pm (local time). Return flights also run on Monday, Wednesday and Friday with flight UO823 leaving Hiroshima at 2.20pm and landing in Hong Kong at 6pm. Hiroshima is located in the southwest of Honshu, Japan’s main island. Attractions include mountains, forests, hot springs and golden beaches. Enjoy hiking, cycling, water sports and skiing.


On November 21, HK Express takes off for Penang on the northwest coast of Malaysia. This is the airline’s debut route with Malaysia and is something of a milestone. The three-hour flight will run daily with flight UO748 taking off at 8.10pm from Hong Kong and landing in Penang at 12.10am. The return flight leaves Penang at 12.24am and arrives back in Hong Kong at 4.40am. Penang is famous for its rich cultural heritage, beaches and year-round warm weather. Nearby George Town is a UNESCO world heritage site with a lively street art scene and colonial architecture. Take a cable car to the peak of Penang Hill for the views and fill-up on Penang specialities like prawn noodles, laksa and nasi Kandar (or ‘carried’ rice).


From December 6 Hong Kongers will be able to take a daily HK Express flight to the Vietnamese ‘pearl’ island of Phu Quoc. Phu Quoc is Vietnam’s largest island and is a popular destination for those seeking a beach holiday. The island is home to numerous resorts catering to families, whether you’re looking to get back to nature in an eco bungalow by the beach or fancy a larger resort with all the bells and whistles. This is HK Express’ third Vietnamese route; existing routes include Danang and Hanoi. Flight UO568 leaves Hong Kong at 4.05pm, landing in Phu Quoc at 6.35pm. And the return flight, UO569, leaves Pho Quoc at 6.35pm and arrives back in Hong Kong at 10.25pm.


Taiwan is next on the destination hit list with flights taking off for Hualien from December 12. This is the airline’s fourth destination in Taiwan, following Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung. The two-hour flight will run on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Flight UO152 takes off from Hong Kong at 4.50pm, landing in Hualien at 6.50pm. The return flight leaves at 7.50pm and lands back in Hong Kong at 10.10pm. Hualien is located on the Pacific Ocean; trip highlights include viewing marble gorges and coastal cliffs in Taroko Gorge, cycling on Qixingtan Beach and wandering Dongdamen Night Market. Hualien is also home to many hot springs.


HK Express will also be adding two new Japanese destinations to their timetable; flights take off to Shizuoka on December 17 and Sendai from January 17. Shizuoka is located on the main island of Honshu with attractions including views of Mount Fuji, hiking trails, tea plantations and the cartoon-themed park, Chibimarukochan Land. Flights run on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, check online with HK Express for the differing timings.


Meanwhile, flights to Sendai will run on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Flight UO890 takes off from Hong Kong at 8.15am, landing in Sendai at 1.30pm. The return flight leaves at 2.25pm and arrives back in Hong Kong at 7pm. Sendai is located in northeast Japan and is known as the ‘City of Trees’. The city is a vibrant hub, hosting festivals and music events and sightseeing opportunities include Osaki Hachimangu Shrine and historic Aoba Castle.
