Flight HX747 from Hong Kong receives a water cannon salute in Chiang Mai
Hong Kong Airlines has launched a new direct service to Chiang Mai.
Chiang Mai in northern Thailand will be the airline’s third destination in the Southeast Asian country, joining Bangkok and Phuket.
The inaugural flight took-off from Hong Kong International Airport this week following a ceremony officiated by Hong Kong Airlines boss, Jeff Sun. It was welcomed in Chiang Mai with a water cannon salute.
“Thailand is one of our most popular destinations and, in addition to Chiang Mai, we operate five daily flights to Bangkok and a daily fight to Phuket,” said Sun. “Coupled with the recent launch of our routes to Laos and Danang, this expansion strengthens our network across Southeast Asia and reinforces Hong Kong Airlines’ commitment to enhancing connectivity along the Belt and Road.”
The Belt and Road Initiative, alternatively known as the New Silk Road, is a global infrastructure development strategy adopted by China in 2013 to better link 154 countries around the world.
Once the ancient capital of the Lanna Kingdom, Chiang Mai is renowned for its rich cultural heritage and is home to numerous UNESCO World Heritage sites. It’s a centre for Thai handicrafts, with surrounding villages specialising in silverware, wood carving, lacquerware and pottery. Visit temples, museums, elephant sanctuaries and of course the must-see vibrant night market. As a celebrated cultural hub, Chinag Mai also hosts many festivals throughout the year.
November through to February is the recommended time of year to visit and travellers heading to Chiang Mai in November will also be able to experience the Loy Krathong Festival of Light. This nation-wide festival illuminates Chiang Mai with colourful parades, traditional dances and illuminated ‘krathongs’, lotus-shaped baskets adorned with flowers and candles that are set afloat on rivers.
Daily flights to Chiang Mai take-off from Hong Kong at 3.30pm, landing in the Thai city at 5.35pm (local time). The return flight leaves Chiang Mai at 6.35pm and lands back in Hong Kong at 10.20pm.
