Hong Kong International Airport runway race

Hong Kong International Airport is hosting a race event to mark the completion of its Centre Runway

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) will be opening its new runway to a special marathon running event this autumn.

The Airport Authority of Hong Kong is partnering with Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) and China Association of Athletics Affiliates to give runners the chance to race along its brand new runway.

The Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon: Three-Runway System 10km International Race will take place on November 17 and will give runners a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to pound the new Centre Runway within HKIA’s restricted area.

The event will include 10km, five kilometre and three kilometre races, a 10km wheelchair event and a Women’s Elite 10km Challenge. Runners will be checked-in at AsiaWorld-Expo and then transported to the event by shuttle bus.

The race celebrates the full commissioning of the three runways at HKIA, as well as the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

Entry will be for around 12,000 runners with priority entry given to those who participated in the Standard Chartered ‘98 New Airport Marathon to celebrate the original opening of HKIA. General registration for the public ballot is from 2pm on September 23.

“Work on HKIA’s Three-Runway System (3RS) has been progressing steadily and all three runways will start operation by the end of this year,” said Vivian Cheung, acting chief executive officer of Airport Authority Hong Kong. “The Three-Runway System 10km International Race is our celebration of this monumental occasion with the public, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for runners to compete on the Centre Runway before its reopening.”

The Standard Chartered ‘98 New Airport Marathon was held at the then-newly built HKIA at Chek Lap Kok and marked one of the largest infrastructure projects ever undertaken in Hong Kong. The race started at the Tsing Ma Bridge and finished on the airport runway, attracting more than 6,000 participants.

Further sponsors of November’s 3RS race include Adidas Hong Kong, Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals, Plaza Premium Group, Regala Skycity Hotel, Thong Sia Watch Company and Crown Motors.

If you’re interested in taking part, registrations for the public ballot should be made online from 2pm on September 23. The first race will start at 8.10am on November 17. Entry fees start from HK$350.
