Kai Tak Sports Park opens

Hong Kong's new 50,000-seater stadium is known as the 'Pearl of the Orient'

Hong Kong’s hugely anticipated Kai Tak Sports Park has officially opened with knock-out live performances in front of more than 33,000 spectators inside the 50,000 seat stadium.

The two-hour live show kicked off with energetic drumbeats and dance displays followed by auspicious lion and dragon dances entering the stadium from all directions to the backdrop of live vocalists. Celebrities and artists from Hong Kong and mainland China presented sports and martial arts performances.

As well as the live entertainment inside the stadium, a LED light show lit the exterior walls of the main arena while fireworks on both sides of the harbour lit up the stadium. It's hoped the US$3.9 billion stadium will attract big events moving forward.

It's hoped the stadium will attract large-scale international events to Hong Kong

“With the completion and opening of Kai Tak Sports Park, Hong Kong is better positioned to actively attract large-scale international events, drawing more visitors and investments, injecting new vitality into the development of sports and performing arts culture industries,” said John Sharkey, chief executive officer of Kai Tak Sports Park.

Upcoming events throughout ‘opening month’ include:

The World Grand Prix 2025, March 4-9

Kai Tak Sports Initiative - Kai Tak Run - March 16

Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens 2025 - March 28-30

A variety of major sports and music events are lined up for the following months. In November, the park will host the 15th National Games which is being held in Hong Kong for the first time.

“We are committed to becoming a vibrant new landmark, offering exhilarating and unforgettable world-class sports, entertainment and leisure experiences for visitors from Hong Kong, Asia and around the globe,” said Sharkey.
