Khao Lak is back along with newly launched Grand Mercure Khao Lak Bangsak resort

Khao Lak is back and with it the newly opened Grand Mercure Khao Lak Bangsak resort.

From the beginning of October, the Thai government has extended a quarantine-free welcome to international holidaymakers travelling directly to the west coast resort of Khao Lak after arriving in Thailand.

Light restrictions under the Khao Lak Sandbox* programme mean tourists must remain in the Khao Lak area for at least seven days before they are permitted to travel elsewhere in the country. And PCR tests must be taken on arrival or day one and day six or seven. Other than that, you’re free to enjoy the miles of sandy beaches lapped by the Andaman Sea.

“Khao Lak is one of Thailand’s most tranquil destinations and our team is incredibly excited to finally open our doors,” said Grand Mercure Khao Lak Bangsak general manager Thomas Reupke. “Grand Mercure Khao Lak Bangsak offers a fresh cultural perspective that encourages guests to immerse themselves in southern Thai culture.”

The beachside property takes its inspiration from the traditional riverside villages of Thailand and a canal flows through the resort, connecting guest rooms with public areas. The rooms and suites all feature private terraces with views over the canal, pool and lush gardens.

Families are well-catered for; youngsters can take part in daily activities at Kids Corner and there’s also a children’s pool.

Hungry tums can be filled at the all-day dining space, Patio, with live cooking stations conjuring up a plethora of Asian and international dishes. Beachside restaurant space Green Mango offers Southern Thai cuisine using recipes that have been passed down the generations. Signature dishes are served in traditional ‘pinto’ tiffin boxes.

And ‘work from home’ parents can take advantage of the resort’s Business Corner, with computers, printers and other services.

The coastal town of Khao Lak is renowned for its stunning beaches, forest and waterfalls and is a 90-minute speedboat ride from the dive and snorkel hot spots of the Similan Islands. The town is a two-hour drive from Phuket’s international airport.

“The resort is the perfect springboard to explore the pristine Andaman coastline and we’re extremely excited to welcome guests,” enthused Reupke.

Special rates start from THB 18,277 for seven nights including daily breakfast with a 35% discount on food and beverage, or THB 33,236 for 14 nights. These rates are available on bookings until November 30 on stays until December 22.

* Khao Lak Sandbox requirements: Proof of full inoculation with a WHO approved vaccine; completed Certificate of Entry; relevant visa if required; health insurance with Covid-19 cover in excess of US$100,000; pre-paid booking at an SHA Plus-approved hotel for at least seven nights; proof of payment for Khao Lak Sandbox PCR tests; an air ticket for a direct international flight to Phuket.
