Major revamp for Hong Kong's Mandarin Oriental - artist's impression of the new-look lobby
The Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has dropped the story of the week with the news that Hong Kong's Mandarin Oriental hotel will be undergoing a massive, multi-million dollar redesign.
Work starts in quarter two of this year on the new look, including a revamped lobby, refreshed guest rooms, an upgraded wellness experience and new restaurant offerings, with Michelin-starred chefs Daniel Boulud and Daniele Cason coming to the hotel.
Not only that, The Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok will also be receiving a multi-million dollar upgrade. The projects aim to elevate the heritage properties under the leadership of Mandarin’s group chief executive Laurent Kleitman who recently revealed a ten-year expansion plan for the group.
“Mandarin Oriental is a global leader in luxury hospitality and as such we elevate our brand and invest in our legacy hotels to ensure we continue to be sought after and loved by future generations,” he said. “I am confident we will continue to exceed our guests’ expectations while maintaining our position in the hearts of our loyal local and international guests in both cities.” The Oriental in Bangkok celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2026.
New-look lobby
Hong Kong’s Mandarin Oriental is the group’s original flagship property and opened in 1963. The US$100 million investment will see a complete redesign of all public spaces by French designer Hubert de Malherbe, including a reimagined hotel lobby, an all-day lounge and a new Whisky Bar with cigar divan.

Redesigned rooms
Designer Jeffrey Wilkes will oversee the redesign of the existing guest rooms and suites while French designer Thierry Lemaire will be responsible for a raft of new signature suites. What’s more, the guestroom floors will be reconfigured to introduce 11 new long-stay style apartments, also designed by Wilkes.
Spa revamp
Enhancements to the Mandarin Spa and Salon will be complemented by the introduction of a new Wellness Club.
Elevated dining
As part of an overall redesign of the Mezzanine Floor, the hotel’s Cake Shop will be updated, while the Mandarin Grill + Bar will receive a new interior and offering and The Clipper Lounge will be expanded. Also on the Mezzanine Floor, Tokyo's Mandarin Oriental's executive chef Daniele Cason will launch a pizza counter with wine pairing, mirroring his award-winning The Pizza Bar on 38th at Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo. The Krug Room will also undergo a revamp and French Michelin-starred chef Daniel Boulud will be opening a new restaurant at the top of Landmark Prince’s, connected to the hotel by an enclosed walkway and featuring a rooftop terrace with city and harbour views. The spot was previously taken by Bonnae Gokson's infamous Sevva cocktail bar and restaurant, which closed in 2023.
The renovation is scheduled to take place over four phases from now until the end of 2026. The hotel will continue to operate throughout most of the renovation period.
“We eagerly anticipate unveiling an extraordinary journey of exceptional new experiences within this storied legacy hotel,” said Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong’s general manager, Greg Liddell, adding that the hotel was the first true luxury hotel to open on Hong Kong Island more than 60 years ago.
Along with the current renovation of Landmark Mandarin Oriental, the project confirms Mandarin’s continued support of the city’s billion dollar ‘Tomorrow’s CENTRAL’ initiative which includes the expansion and upgrade of Landmark Atrium, Landmark Alexandra and Landmark Prince’s.
