Mandarin Oriental reveals ten-year expansion plan

Mandarin Oriental expansion plans

Mandarin Qianmen, Beijing, recently opened with 42 courtyard houses

Changes are afoot at Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group as new boss Laurent Klietman reveals a ten-year expansion plan for the group to double its portfolio within a decade.

Under a new tagline of ‘Fans of the Exceptional, Every Day, Everywhere’, Klietman, who stepped into the role of Mandarin’s chief executive officer just a year ago, will be placing emphasis on accelerated growth with a view to doubling the portfolio over the next ten years. Investment will be focused on growing its city and resort portfolio and expanding into key regions including the Middle East, Japan and North America. The group will also be focusing on capital cities including London, Beijing, Hong Kong and Dubai.

Enhanced product offerings will include a new app which will be rolled out next year. It has been designed to smooth the guest experience, from making a reservation through to keeping in touch with hotel teams during a stay.

The group will also be introducing more cake shops into its hotels (branded patisseries are an affordable entry point for consumers), and there will also be a new Wellness 2.0 concept combining physical, spiritual and medical wellness services.

Over the last 12 months, Mandarin Oriental has announced a series of new and pipeline openings, which in Asia have included three new boutique properties in Japan and a new resort with private residences in Bali. Last month the stunning Mandarin Qianmen, Beijing opened, the group’s tenth property in China and the first in a series of new developments in the country covering Chengdu, Hangzhou and Nanjing. Last year, Mandarin Oriental Singapore reopened following a six-month refurbishment project. And Hong Kong's Mandarin Landmark hotel is currently undergoing a year-long refurbishment as part of the city's wider upgrade to its Landmark branded properties.

Mandarin Oriental operates 41 hotels, 12 residences and 24 exclusive homes in 26 countries and territories, with 28 hotels and resorts and 18 properties currently in development.

“I’m delighted to deliver this new vision for Mandarin Oriental,” said Kleitman. “We are excited to bring the world of Mandarin Oriental to more of the most beautiful, inspiring and vibrant destinations across the world. We have begun this new chapter by sharing the new strategy with our 15,000 colleagues and our partners who are central to the delivery of the vision and I am delighted that they have responded so strongly.”
