Octopus smooths the way when catching public transport.
Hong Kong's Octopus set to launch a new contactless card that can be used throughout mainland China.
The Octopus card is Hong Kong's contactless stored value card and is accepted across the city's public transport network. The new card will enable users to access public transportation in more than 300 Chinese cities, revolutionising travel in mainland China for Hong Kongers. Users will be able to recharge the card in Hong Kong dollars and payment will automatically convert to Chinese renminbi.
Although Octopus will be launching the new Octopus as a physical card, it can still be recharged and managed via the Octopus app as with the existing card.
When used in Hong Kong, the card will have the a stored value limit of HK$3,000, but in mainland China, the card can be recharged with a maximum value of 1,000 yuan (around HK$1,100).
The new cards will be available from MTR stations from later this month with a view to usage in mainland cities from the second half of this year.
