Tibet Airlines is expected to unveil a new Hong Kong service enabliing Hong Kongers to fly to the Tibetan capital of Lhasa faster than on any other route.

Air China currently operates routes linking Lhasa and Hong Kong but with substantial layover times in Chinese cities. The new Tibet Airlines route takes just eight hours.

The new service is slated to launch on February 19, with Tibet Airlines flights leaving Hong Kong twice a week on Wednesday and Sunday with a stop at Chengdu Tianfu International Airport in China. The return flights operate on the same days, also with a stop in Chengdu.

The service departs Hong Kong at 3.45pm, arriving at Lhasa Gonggar Airport at 11.30pm. Return flights take off from Lhasa at 8.10am, landing in Hong Kong at 2.35pm.

Despite the layover, Tibetan Authorities claim the new route will “substantially” shorten travel times between Hong Kong and Lhasa. There are currently no direct flights between the two cities.

The new service aligns with China’s wider plans of easing visa restrictions and increasing flight routes to lift tourist numbers. It’s anticipated the new Lhasa route will offer more choice for passengers, promote a deeper understanding of the Tibet autonomous region and generate economic, trade and cultural cooperation with the Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan regions.
