A Harry Potter attraction is set to launch in Shanghai, according to US entertainment company Warner Bros.

Warner Bros Studio Tours currently has locations in London and Tokyo and is now planning to open a Harry Potter attraction at Shanghai’s Jinjiang Action Park.

Warner Bros Discovery is working with Chinese tourism company Jinjiang International to develop the attraction at the park which is set to reopen in 2027 following major renovations.

‘The making of Harry Potter studio tour’ is currently under approval and is expected to include indoor soundstages and outdoor backlot areas. The tour, which will last at least half a day, will give behind the scenes insights into how the books were brought to the big screen, including the filmmaking process, the chance to explore various scenes and view original props and costumes used in the Harry Potter films.

Jinjiang Action Park is one of China’s oldest amusement parks and originally opened in 1984. In January this year it was closed for extensive renovations and isn’t expected to reopen until 2027. When operational again, it’s hoped the visitor count will rise from around 800,000 to two million visitors annually.

Jinjiang is unusual in that it is centrally located in Shanghai. The city’s other major park attractions are located on the outskirts of the city and include Shanghai Disneyland in Pudong, Legoland Shanghai Resort in Jinshan, which is due to open later this year, and an upcoming Peppa Pig theme park in Chongming which is slated to open in 2027. Universal Studios in Beijing currently offers a Wizarding World of Harry Potter zone.

However, as visitors to the Warner Bros Harry Potter attractions in London and Tokyo will testify, the Harry Potter Studio Tour follows a museum-style format rather than a wild ride and requires advance reservations.

As the amusement park openings gather pace, it seems Shanghai is set to position as a premier destination for tourism and leisure.
